Safe at Home

safe-at-homeOur Safe at Home Program is a year-round program that addresses home repair and maintenance issues that potentially present a safety risk or limit the access to or within the home. This program is driven by our mission to provide a safe and healthy home for every person. We specifically look at fall and fire prevention issues within a home.

Safety and Prevention are grouped into three categories:
Falls Prevention

  • Falls and the threat of falling in the home can be a debilitating and life-altering event. Many who fall in their home, due to a lack of preventative modifications, are unable to recover
  • More than one third of adults 65 and older fall each year in the United States
  • Among older adults, falls are the leading cause of injury deaths. They are also the most common cause of nonfatal injuries and hospital admissions for trauma
  • Safe at Home addresses these threats in a variety of ways, including: installing grab bars throughout the home, widening doorways for greater access, repairing stairways, handrails, and wheelchair ramps inside and outside the home

Fire Safety and Prevention

  • Eighty-four percent of all fire deaths resulted from home fires
  • Sixty-three percent of reported home fire deaths happened in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms
  • Rebuilding Together’s Safe at Home addresses these threats through various practices, including: the installation of fire alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, eliminate electrical hazards, and repair structural defects

General Safety

  • General home safety modifications can drastically improve the living condition of a family. Rebuilding Together’s core work and the Safe at Home program address general safety updrages and rehabilitative practices to ensure the absolute safety and health of the homeowner
